The Hollywood and Fashion's elite had once again gathered at the Metropolitan Museum of Art Gallery's annual gala with the theme "Manus x Machina: Fashion In An Age Of Technology" last May 2 in New York. The much-talked-about Met Gala showcased intricate designs with this year's theme, incorporating modernization and technology with fashion couture.
A-listers from both the entertainment and fashion worlds have gathered to celebrate the Costume Institute's Spring Exhibition. Among were designers who challenged and lived up to the theme in making couture that were worn by Czech model Karolína Kurková and actress Clare Danes, who both wore high-tech dresses in the light of the event.
Kurková wore a simple gown that was a collaboration of IBM Watson and high-end fashion brand Marchesa, according to Quartz. Prior to the event, Kurková posted on her social media account encouraging fans to tweet and share and her dress would respond to them.
The "cognitive" gown lights up with the help of the LED lights attached to the dress, which not only light up randomly but also focus on the data gathered by the reaction through the social media, basing on tweets and emotions expressed by the viewers surrounding the event.
The colors changed to rose, which signifies joy; coral for passion; lavender, which shows curiosity; butter, which represents encouragement; and aqua for excitement. The cognitive process that the dress had showcased expressed the artificial intelligence that processes not only information but also emotions and logic.
Aside from Kurková, Zac Posen also designed a dress that was impressively woven with fiber optic lights in organza to create a dream-like dress for Danes. The gown glowed in the dark from head to toe in the cut that was compared to a modern-day Cinderella. Danes posted on her Instagram account how the dress looks like in the dim light.
Other celebrities like Kanye West and wife Kim Kardashian, with sisters Kendall and Kylie Jenner, opted for a silver metallic theme. Meanwhile, singers/songwriters Taylor Swift, Lady Gaga and Nicki Minaj went for dark, robotic glam.
The much-awaited annual event also gives a chance to celebrities to endorse their advocacies, such as Emma Watson's recycled plastic dress, which can only be described as regal and inspirational.
This year's Met Gala was brought together by the Metropolitan Museum of Art and Apple.
