Windows 10 Anniversary Update: More Promoted Apps, Advertisements In Start Menu

Microsoft announced at its recently held Build conference that it will be releasing a free Windows 10 update this summer. The new update is called the Windows 10 Anniversary Update and it will come with several new features along with some old ones in a new form.

The Windows 10 Anniversary Update will incorporate other features such as facial recognition security options in addition to a superior Cortana. However, the downside of the Windows 10 Anniversary Update is the unwanted increase in the number of advertisements.

Perhaps, advertisements are the most loathed feature of Windows 10. They appear in the apps list, lock screen and also the Start Menu. Unfortunately, the Redmond tech titan plans to increase the amount of Promoted Apps twofold. When the company releases the Windows 10 Anniversary Update this summer, users will find the concealed Promoted Apps in the Start Menu, Neowin reported.

Precisely speaking, the Suggested Apps will enhance from five to 10. Simultaneously, the number of "static" apps, which are basically stock apps that are attached to the Start Menu by default, will decline from 17 to 12. These aside, select Windows Inbox Apps will also be distributed through Promoted Apps.

For the uninitiated, Promoted Apps are considered to be "Programmable Tiles" and are designed to appear akin to an app that is pre-installed on the PC. Clicking on any one of them will take the user to the App Store to acquire it. For instance, once such pre-installed Promoted App is the "Candy Crush" titles, while another one is Microsoft's Solitaire Collection.

The supposed aim of the introducing more Promoted Apps is to lessen OEM image complexity as well as creation and, at the same time, reduce maintenance and deployment time. However, users will be "in control" and can remove those they want to with a view to save disk space, Tech Times reported.

However, this is not the first time that Microsoft will be making a splash with Promoted Apps. Earlier, the company announced in May 2015 that it would by design install "Candy Crush Saga" to users' computers when they download Windows 10. This, according to Microsoft, is an effort to help app developers earn more revenue.
