The Motorola Razr flip phone was all the rage back in 2004, selling over 130 million units. Now, the mobile phone giant is set to bring the flip phone back this year.
Motorola, now owned by Lenovo, has released an ad, showing a few people using the iconic flip phones in a school setting, with 2006 Boys Like Girls' teenage anthem, "The Great Escape" playing in the background. "Flip back to the Razr days of yesteryear and get ready for the future," the description on the official video reads, ending the video with TTYL, which means "talk to you later" in text speak. The Razr was considered a fashion phone a few years ago, especially the pink colored ones, due to its thin profile and striking appearance. The V3 model sold over 130 million units, making it the best-selling flip phone to date.
Engadget speculates that Motorola may well launch a modern Razr flip Android smartphone. Techcrunch, however, is less enthusiastic about the concept, saying that the original Razr numpad, although it looks cool, "was never particularly good." Techcrunch also points out a possibility of just recycling the old Razr logo.
Mashable has reported that this was not the first time that Motorola has tried reviving the Razr brand. Back when Motorola was owned by Verizon, the mobile phone company has released the Motorola Droid Razr, which really looks like an ordinary Android phone.
Motorola will be releasing more information at Lenovo's Tech World on June 9, along with details about the phone company's other Moto X phones.
In Japan, flip phones are still widely used, compared to other advanced nations. However, reports were made about dwindling flip phone sales. Techinasia reports that this is due to more Japanese people switching and opting for smartphones for the first time in years. With the possible launch of the Motorola Razr flip phone, there might still be hope for the dying flip phone industry.
