A live action trailer of "Deux Ex: Mankind Divided" was dropped by Square Enix and Eidos Montreal today, giving the viewers a background of the game's story.
The trailer, titled "The Mechanical Apartheid," is set in 2027, when augmented limbs are the norm and artificial body parts are commonplace. This technology seems to have moved humanity in the right direction, until an incident caused these augmented humans, or 'augs' for short, to lose control and attack other people.
The so-called 'aug incident' sparked a major panic amongst people, leading them to question whether they are safe to coexist with the augs. The issue escalated overtime, bringing chaos and discrimination.
The increasing threat to humanity led many countries to pass a law called "The Human Restoration Act," which orders separation of non-augmented individuals, or 'naturals', from 'augs'.
The trailer gave an excellent introduction to Deus Ex's backstory. Windows Central reports the game's plot is a frightening look at a version of the near future. While, Bleeding Cool notes that the "Deus Ex" trailer has tackled real-life issues, such as racism.
Last month, Square and Eidos released a gameplay trailer of "Deus Ex: Mankind Divided." The trailer showed protagonist, Adam Jensen, in the middle of the 'aug incident'. Jensen, who has an augmented limb as well, will fight the increasing Illuminati threat, which is thought to have started the incident in an attempt to gain control over humanity.
The game was initially pegged for a February 23 release, but was pushed back. Eidos Montreal's head of studio, David Anfossi, stated that the team would need more time to refine the game.
The action-RPG will be shown at this year's Square Enix E3 lineup, with a playable demo available at their booth. "Deus Ex: Mankind Divided" is scheduled to be released August 23 and will be available on the Playstation 4, Xbox One, and PC.
