'The Last Guardian' PS4 2016 Release Date Comfirmed: Trico & New Gameplay Details Revealed

More details unveiled on Trico, the enigmatic creature of "The Last Guardian." Sony has confirmed the title's launch on the PlayStation 4 and slated to launch within the year.

Sony revealed that Trico, the chimera-like creature in the game, is able to shoot a deadly stream of lightning out of its tail. Director Fumito Ueda reveals in an interview with Edge, as reported by Games Radar:

"There are several reasons why I explored this idea, but one of them is to make players understand the force and ferocity of Trico. I believe things are more attractive when there's a bit of oddness to them, rather than something being normal and appearing to be generally acceptable. The same thing can be said about Trico's appearance."

Edge Magazine was allowed a hands-on demo of the game, which showcased Trico's powers against enemies and its means of interacting with the environment. Trico's lightning ability is channelled with a mirror, which is used to redirect the lightning in the desired direction. In the demo, the ability was demonstrated with puzzle-solving tasks.

Ueda has hinted Trico's ability will be a crucial component of the game. Players can also use Trico to gauge in-game situations and environments; its feathers bristle when agitated and its eyes change color an indication of its state of mind.

Development for Sony's "The Last Guardian" was practically shelved until it was confirmed for launch at E3 2015. Originally unveiled in 2009 and announced for the PlayStation 3, the title is now developed for the PlayStation 4.

An IGN review of the demo commented on the title's emphasis on storytelling, as opposed to similar games that are dependent on design. According to the review, the mirror was introduced early in the game not only to give a taste of Trico's abilities, but also to show how this affects the player's dynamic with the creature. The game on heavy on the storytelling element, a theme that was deliberately withheld from the demo to build anticipation towards the launch date.
