HP to Release an 'Omen X' VR Backpack?

HP has released a teaser of their newest product under the Omen gaming line, the "Omen X" VR Backpack. After announcing the release of two laptops and a desktop under the Omen gaming brand, HP has now shown a prototype of the portable Virtual Reality rig, a development kit called the "Omen X VR PC Pack."

TechCrunch reports that the prototype might be different from what HP will release on the market. "We're not announcing a product for sale," HP's VP of Consumer PC & Solutions, Mike Nash, said. "But we are looking for a select group of developers to help vet the backpack, provide feedback to us, and see what kind of new experiences they supply to us with this backpack."

Nash went on to say that the backpack PC is the company's attempt to get into the virtual reality world, in hopes of providing a more immersive virtual experience.

The current prototype weighs in at under 10 pounds and has a battery that lasts for about an hour per charge. It also comes with a belt that lets users hot-swap batteries. In addition, the prototype comes with two large vents for cooling.

According to Digital Trends, the developer kit includes two USB Type-A ports, two USB Type-C ports, an HDMI port, audio combo jack, DC output jack for headphone power, two battery DC input jacks and a DC input jack for when the desktop needs to be connected to a wall outlet.

HP has not released any spec information for the Omen X VR PC pack, but Digital Trends reported that the current model supports the latest Intel quad-core Core i5/i7 H processor, M.2 SSDs with up to 512GB of capacity and up to 32GB of DDR4 memory.

The tech company has no concrete release plans yet but is aiming to deploy the development kits by the next month. While waiting for the Omen X VR backpack, gamers can still enjoy the Omen brand's line of laptops and desktop.

The laptops are priced at $900 to $1000 and hit Best Buy on July 10. The price of the desktop has not been released yet, but available for purchase by August.
