AMD Radeon RX 480 Details Ahead Of June 29 Launch

AMD will launch Radeon RX 480 GPU on Wednesday, June 29, in $200 and $230 price variants.

PC Invasion reports that AMD's RX480 will represent the most powerful video card in their Polaris line-up. AMD's Lisa Su strongly indicated at the E3 PC Gaming Show that the 460, 470 and 480 cards would all be Polaris architecture based GPUs. "Vega," a different GPU structure, is expected to power AMD's even higher end cards such as 490s, either later this year or early 2017.

Yibada reports that the AMD Radeon RX 480 alongside the RX 470 and the RX 460 are all set to launch on June 29. The 480 in particular is set to rival the Nvidia GTX 1080 and the GTX 1070.

WCCF Tech reports that the RX 480 will come in two variants. The 8GB DDR5 will cost $2294GB and the GDDR5 card will cost $199. In comparison, the 8GB 470 will cost $179 and the 4GB 470 will cost $149, while the 8GB 460 will cost $129 and the 4GB 460 will cost $99.

The Radeon RX 480 is relatively competitive in power and performance, despite being significantly less expensive than Nvidia's latest offerings. The 480 cards managed to achieve a total score of 4,880 points in a 3DMark Firestrike Ultra benchmark. The GTX 1080 achieved a 5,000-5,1000 score, in comparison.

As it will lead to higher profits, AMD is likely focusing solely on the performance of the Radeon RX 480, The graphics card is designed for video editing and high-end gaming.

Compared to the 1,024 stream processors of the RX 460, the RX 480 utilizes 2,304 stream processors. RX 480 has a memory bandwidth of 256 GB/s while the RX 460's memory bandwidth is at 112 GB/s.

According to PC World, as it is the first AMD GPU to utilize a 14nm architecture, the RX 480 is also a two-generation leap. The older 28nm designs used in former AMD video cards were less powerful and larger.

According to Videocardz, the video card manufacturer company XFX is preparing two or three RX 480 cards for launch. The so-called Black Edition OC (RX-480M8BBA6) is also bundled with DisplayPort to DVI-D adapter. It will feature factory-overclocked configuration to 1328 MHz and backplate. The XFX Black Edition model (RX-480M8BFA6) will come with a slightly lower 1288 MHz clock.
