Canabalt has been available on iOS for a long time, almost as long as the iPhone, and has received few updates while remaining popular. Now, though, the game's developer could be bringing multiplayer to the game and achievements two years after a special version of the game supported co-op.
Small Secret Software, the developer, talked on its blog about the updates. It said that the game in the past hasn't needed to be updated because the formula could change significantly, as the game is built around just timing screen taps. However, thoughts have changed since users began requesting updates.
The dev said local two-multiplayer could arrive, which look like a competitive mode from a trailer, eight hardcore game modes with leaderboard support, and Game Center achievements. All the features will be available for free on iOS, and the game is currently on sale for $0.99 on iOS.
In the blog post, a sequel was originally discussed versus the update.
"[I]t would be a bit more cinematic, maybe throw in some slow-motion here and there ... I knew I didn't want to add guns or double jumps or whatever. The rest of endless runners pretty much have the "buy in-game hats with real money" market cornered," Small Secret added.
Next for the developers is Hundreds for iPad. It "doesn't really look or play like anything else on the App Store." The developers added the game has around 100 levels - or "rounds" - which range in difficulty.
"However, like Canabalt, Hundreds is a game that doesn't have a whole lot of moving parts or ingredients, so we've decided to take extra time to make sure that the few bits and pieces that ARE there are as amazing as we can make them," it added. The game will release around August 2012, potentially later.
In 2010 the multiplayer feature was brought to the game via a 1980s arcade machine - the Winnitron 1000 - in Winnipeg, Canada, a refurbished arcade machine that plays "brand new games created by independent developers." The popularity of the machine has since caused people to build machines in other areas.
