Samsung has introduced a new 4 TB 850 EVO SSD memory priced at $1,500.
According to PCMag, the South Korean high-tech giant introduced its first 850 EVO memory back in 2014. The 4 TB configuration has already become available last week at some online retailers, but without any official announcement from the company.
On Monday, July 11, Samsung officially updated its EVO product page with the larger 4 TB drive. The 850 EVO SSD drive also comes in versions of 500 GB, 250 GB, 120 GB, 1 TB and 2 TB.
There are also larger SSDs available on the market. The world's highest-capacity SSD, a 16 TB 850 EVO SSD model from Samsung began shipping in March. However, the model is designed for use in enterprise storage systems, rather than in consumer desktops or portables.
Amazon accepts pre-orders for the 4 TB 850 EVO SSD memory drive. The shipments are expected to begin on July 31.
According to The Verge, Samsung's 850 EVO series is one of the most popular solid state drive model sold on Amazon. The 500 GB version costs just around $150, while the smallest 120 GB model is available for around $70. The EVO SSDs come with a five-year warranty.
Samsung positions its 850 EVO series as premium consumer products with matching premium prices. The SSD drives feature V-NAND technology along with Samsung's proprietary Triple Layer Cell NAND memory-chip technology. In order to fit more memory into a smaller space, the SSDs use 3D cell stacking.
The 4 TB version of its best-selling Samsung SSD would provide enough storage for anything. The $1,500 price tag breaks down to a reasonable $0.37 per gigabyte. This makes it just slightly more expensive, compared to the smaller sizes.
Samsung's 4 TB 850 SSD drive caters to professionals like video editors, as well as enthusiast gamers. The read and write speed performance of the drive are estimated at 540 MB/s and 520 MB/s, respectively.
