The Chinese-based Pangu group showed a jailbreak version of the iOS 10 at the Mobile Security Conference (MOSEC) held on July 1. The conference was held in Shanghai and was jointly hosted by Pangu and PoC, a Korean-based hacker team.
The group demonstrated its prowess by running the Cydia app manager on the iOS 10. However, no jailbreak tools were offered. The Chinese group also made a presentation regarding the lack of security for Apple devices running the on the iOS 9.3.2.
It was during this time that the Chinese reportedly announced that they have a working jailbreak version for the iOS 9.3.2 and intend to launch it as soon as possible. The Korean hackers however, denied that such an announcement has been made, according to superhen.co.
Although Pangu was successful in creating an iOS 10 jailbreak version, it was only a beta version of Apple's latest iOS. One of the Chinese hackers confided that iOS final versions are tougher nuts to crack.
Beta versions are easier targets since they are presumably stripped of security features. Pangu however, has gained some valuable insights on the weak security spots of iOS 10. They could easily exploit these weaknesses if Apple does not patch up these less protected areas in the full and final version.
Still, the rumor has elicited a buzz of excitement for those who are waiting for a jailbreak tool for their iPhone and iPads. Despite the denials, many are still waiting for a jailbreak version for the iOS 9.3.2.
Many Apple device owners resort to jailbreaking in order to gain access to apps not authorized by the Apple App Store. This can be dangerous since it effectively voids any warranty from the manufacturer in case something goes awry with their smartphones or tablets.
Users could also be unwittingly handing their personal and financial data to unauthorized apps loaded with malware. To lessen the risks, jailbreak users should only download apps verified by Cydia or other trusted sources.
