Samsung, on Tuesday, announced a new Series 5 Chromebook and a new $329 Chromebox, a mini PC, both of which are powered by Google Chrome OS.
The latest Series 5 550 Chromebook retains its predecessor's 12.1-inch and 1280x800 pixel display and 3.3-pound weight. The RAM has been doubled in the netbook from original 2GB to 4GB and the processor has also been upgraded from last year's Intel Atom processor to Intel Celeron dual-core processor with integrated HD graphics. The latest netbook features 4GB internal memory, a 4-in-1 memory slot, two USB 2.0 ports, Kensington lock port, DisplayPort++ and an HD webcam.
According to the Korean electronics giant, the new Chromebook is 2.5 times faster than the previous model, with a boot-time of 7 seconds. The Chromebook Series 5 550 will come with a price tag of $449 for Wi-Fi only models and $549 for Wi-Fi+3G models.
Samsung's Chromebox Series 3 is a small, square mini PC that comes with Intel Celeron Processor B840, integrated HD graphics, 4GB RAM, 16GB storage, dual band 2.4/5GHz 802.11 a/b/g/n Wi-Fi, Gigibit Ethernet port, six USB 2.0 ports, two DisplayPort++ jacks, DVI, and Bluetooth 3.0. With Chromebox running Chrome OS, user can easily sync files, bookmarks, and apps and can instantly update on other devices running the Chrome browser.
Moreover, Samsung has developed a keyboard that is optimized for Chrome with a dedicated search key, a row of web-enabled keys, and a comfortable, full-size layout that doesn't cramp your fingers to minimize your chances of making errors.
The Chromebox comes with a price tag of $329.
