Google, Samsung Takes on Apple with Chromebook, Chromebox

Samsung announced, Wednesday, the release of Mac-look-a-like Chromebox and Chromebook, a desktop PC and laptop that runs on Google Chrome OS. Both the devices will be available online from May 29 in the U.S.

The Chromebook works just like an ultraportable notebook but comes with a completely new operating system. This operating system is getting popular among some business companies and educational institutes for it's easy to use interface and automatic updates. Still the laptops loaded with Android operating system like Samsung and Acer failed to grab the attention of consumers, leading to a low sales record. But if people want to enjoy flexibility when using Chrome operating system or want to enjoy a new OS in their HDTV, Chromebox is there to help them.

The 12.1inch Chromebook is packed with 4GB memory and Intel Core processor. All the atom-based machines released last year were quite sluggish and received a lot of complaints so it's a big improvement. It will run for six hours once it's fully charged and comes with 1280x800 resolution display.

Samsung Chromebox also features 4GB memory and Intel Core processor. But a big negative of these devices is their price. Chrome OS is new compared to other operating systems and offers limited features but still costs more than Asus Transformer Pad or iPad 2.

The build quality is also nothing special, when compared to the ones one will get for the same price. However, there's a good news - the Chrome Web Store comes integrated with the ChromeOS which means people will be able to enjoy Angry Birds and other popular web apps in Chromebook.

On the other hand, Chromebox series 3 works like a miniPC that can be connected with a PC or HDTV. After reviewing the OS, it won't be wrong to say Chrome OS still has a lot of room for improvement. But people with less experience with computers or for want of cheap and portable laptops can try the latest Chromebook series 5 550.
