'The Vampire Diaries' Cancelled; Season 8 Confirmed To Be Series Finale

After eight long years of the show running, "The Vampire Diaries" will finally come to its end on its eighth and final season. This news has been confirmed by the cast and crew themselves during the San Diego Comic-Con.

Last Saturday, the cast and crew of "The Vampire Diaries" confirmed the end of their show during the eights season. This was announced during the San Diego Comic-Con panel interview. Julie Plec, the showrunner, announced that season eight will be their last season.

According to Plec, she is happy that "The Vampire Diaries" lasted that long and that the writers can give the ending that the show deserves. She is thankful to CW for giving them the privilege of choosing their own time to end the journey in their own creative terms, as reported by Variety.

One of the creators, Williamson, also announced during the panel that he will be coming back as a writer for the eighth and final season of "The Vampire Diaries." He expressed his sincerest gratitude for being a part of the show.

"The Vampire Diaries" coming to an end has not come as a surprise to the fans anymore. Albeit they are dismayed at the confirmation, they have already accepted it at some point. It all started when Nina Dobrev exited the show during the sixth season. Speculations of the show ending continued to grow when Ian Somerhalder (playing Damon Salvatore) and Kat Graham (playing Bonnie) spoke about a farewell recently.

As for news on Nina Dobrev returning to the show for its finale, Plec said they would love for the actress to come back and give her character a proper ending. She was, in fact, the show's protagonist for a long time. Entertainment Weekly reported that Nina is open to the possibility of coming back if there is something that she needs to do to give "The Vampire Diaries" a great finale.
