The numbers of new users in Twitter is decreasing day by day. On the other hand, its number of engaged users is rising.
Based on a report revealed by the Pew Internet and American Life Project, about 15% adult Internet users of US use Twitter. This percentage was 13% before in May 2011. The growth of new users at Twitter is slowing whereas the proportion of engaged users are increasing. Positive news for the Twitter fans here is, the percentage of online adults Twitter user on a typical day is now 8%. It has doubled since 2011 and was only 2% in late 2010.
"Pew doesn't ask survey respondents about Facebook usage specifically, but given its dominance, the questions it does ask about overall use of social media services provide a "pretty good proxy" for Facebook," says Aaron Smith, senior research specialist. Smartphones are what making people attached to this popular social networking site. Smartphone users find Twitter easy to use for its 140-character messages and easy to use service.
Dan Olds, an analyst with The Gabriel Consulting Group believes this news is both good and bad for Twitter. There is no use of having a large number of users if they are inactive. Advertisers would also love to have a small number of committed users.
The Pew researchers said younger people are the ones increasing this growth. They are using Twitter's services from different apps and mobile Web. There was no Facebook related question in this survey but it does provide a good proxy for the popular social networking website.
But at the end of the day, Twitter and Facebook are serving in different ways. Twitter works like a news feed whereas Facebook is a complete social networking website with plenty of options.
