Google has announced its acquisition of Orbitera, a startup company that focuses on solutions for vendors of cloud-based products.
Google CEO Sundar Pichai announced recently that the company's Cloud Platform already runs four million applications. He added that with the passage of time, Google's cloud business is gaining significant traction.
In this context, the internet search giant has published details about its latest acquisition in a blog post. According to Google's announcement, Orbitera provides a suite of tools for billing businesses that use cloud applications as well as for deploying and managing various cloud apps.
Up to date, Orbitera has supported deploying cloud applications on Microsoft Azure and Amazon Web Services, rather than on Google's Cloud Platform. Google explained that it will continue to support deployments on different software platforms. The internet search giant applied a similar approach with a cloud monitoring tool called Stackdriver.
According to Computerworld, one of Orbitera's key features is a service that allows companies to try the cloud as an enterprise software. Various app vendors can set up proof-of-concept environment profiles. When a user requests a trial, these environments are automatically deployed on their chosen cloud platform.
In a somewhat different approach from Microsoft and Amazon, Google aims to build credibility with enterprises by supporting businesses with multi-cloud deployments. While both Microsoft and Amazon support multi-cloud deployments, they focus their marketing approach on convincing customers to standardize their own services.
Android Headlines reports that Google has decided not to interfere in Orbitera's independent operations in the foreseeable future. The giant internet search company is committed to maintaining Orbitera's neutrality as a platform supporting multi-cloud commerce.
Regardless of the acquisition, customers of Orbitera apps will continue to have the flexibility to run their chosen cloud environments and the cloud platform ecosystem will remain as competitive as before. Google may provide Orbitera with just an extra funding boost since the startup is already known as an important player in the cloud market.
