Sony Unveils Cyber-Shot DSC-RX100

Japan-based consumer electronics manufacturer Sony Corp has recently announced the launch of its first large-sensor camera in Cyber-shot series. The talk is about DSC-RX100, for which Sony has claimed that it is the most advanced point and shoot the company has ever released.

Key Specs

The newly launched point and shoot camera, DSC-RX100 is equipped with 20.2 megapixel shooter with 1-inch (13.2 x 8.8mm) CMOS sensor, which is reportedly four times larger than other compact cameras. Over here, a bigger sensor means sharper details, and improved low-light performance.

According to Sony, the camera can also shoot at up to 10 frames per second (in full resolution) and has high-speed autofocus that locks onto a subject in as quickly as 0.13 seconds.

The Exmos sensor is backed by an f/1.8 Carl-Zeiss Vario-Sonnar T* lens with a 3.6x optical zoom, a 120 to 25,600 ISO range, and a battery that will reportedly last for about 330 shots.

The device is also fairly compact, measuring in dimensions at 101.6 x 58.1 x 35.9mm and weighing just 240g (with battery and memory card). It offers a 3-inch, 1,229k dot LCD display bolstered by Sony's WhiteMagic technology -- additional white pixels are used to boost screen brightness and enhance details.

According to Verge reports, they noted that the DSC-RX100 boasts some of the special shooting modes on the Sony Alpha SLT-A37 and NEX-F3, including auto portrait framing and Sony's clear image zoom, which uses an internal database to "fill in" missing pixels, in an attempt to generate clear, full-resolution zoom images. Further, the DSC-RX100 will be able to capture RAW images (in addition to JPEGs), and shoot 1920 x 1080 AVCHD and MP4 video.

Price And Availability

The Cyber-shot DSC-RX100 digital camera will be available this July in the US market at a price of about $650. The camera and accessories will be available at Sony retail stores (www.store.sony.com) and other authorized dealers nationwide.
