A fishing columnist for Australia's Daily Telegraph has found a near 15ft-long giant squid, one of the vaguest creatures of the ocean, with his crew. This three meter long giant ruby red-colored squid was found floating off the south coast of Australia, about 50km off Jervis Bay.
The rare giant squid was already dead when the columnist of Daily Telegraph, Al McGlashan found it. At the time of the sighting, a blue shark was spotted gorging on the carcass of the cephalopod. Most of its tentacles were bitten off and it looked like the giant squid had died in a fight with a sperm whale, its only known predator. "Most squid only live for a year, they grow extremely quickly, but there is also a chance that it has been attacked by a sperm whale," Dr Reid said. He also added "Sperm whales are far bigger, heavier and faster in the water - the giant squid are quite slow - so the whale generally wins."
But McGlashan believes the giant squid died just before they found it. "It must have died not that long before we found it because it didn't smell at all and its colors were still strong - most giant squid remains are smelly and rotten and just off-white by the time someone finds them," McGlashan said.
McGlashan captured the monster with his crew from the deep. He was there to film for his new television series "Strikeforce". "I can't believe how mad the media has gone about the giant squid. Interviews all day mind u (awesome) encounter to get on film," McGlashan tweeted.
