Buyers of Samsung Galaxy S3 smartphone from either Verizon or AT&T were earlier offered 48GB of free storage with Dropbox. This storage space was in addition to the 2GB given free to each new account. Unfortunately the promotion has been cancelled.
A notice on the Dropbox website simply states "Select carriers have opted out of the promotion on phones that were otherwise eligible. Unfortunately Verizon and AT&T are among those carriers who are currently not participating."
The promotional offer, which is valid for two years, may still be available with other carriers, as long as few stipulations are met. A new Samsung phone with Dropbox already installed is required. To claim the 50GB, 5 quests must be completed, and these quests will require the use of a desktop PC.
No reasons were given as to why Verizon and AT&T decided to opt out of the promotion, but a number of theories are being circulated. It has been suggested that both companies may be planning to offer their own cloud storage services, or they may be cautious about the services being abused, with excessive file transfers on their networks.
The promotion was a time-limited offer that included an optional upgrade to Dropbox paid services.
Dropbox allows storage of files that can easily be accessed or shared as long as you have an Internet connection. Free accounts start at 2GB, and subscriptions are available for up to 100 GB of storage space. All that is needed for registration is a valid email address for registration.
The Galaxy S3 is Samsung's latest Android handset that features, what is perhaps the largest HD screen at 4.8 inches. Samsung claims that the features included in the Galaxy S3 are superior to those included in the iPhone.
