Scientists May Have Discovered Legendary Lost City of Gold Ciudad Blanca in Honduras

A team of scientists believe they may have found the legendary lost city of Ciudad Blanca. The city is known as the 'White City' of Gold in Honduras.

Researchers from the National Science Foundation and University of Houston revealed that they have found a remote region of Honduras where it is possible to find the legendary city. This discovery was done using advanced laser mapping. Researchers used a small plane to fly over the Mosquitia region and shooted billions of laser pulses at the ground to create a 3D map of that place. After assembling all their collected data, they believe they noticed some man-made elevation changes in that area.

People heard about this legend at first in a letter by conquistador Hernando Cortes to King Charles V of Spain in 1526. The lost city is believed to be full of gold. Ciudad Blanca enthusiast, cinematographer Steven Elkins tried to use NCLAM's laser mapping technology to find this lost city inspired by the legend. Once the mapping was done, all the data were delivered to University of Houston's engineer, Bill Carter. He also works with the NCLAM.

Bill Carter is the one who discovered the signs of man-made structures in that area. "I'm the only person right now on the planet that knows that there's these ruins," said Carter while trying to remember that moment and his thoughts when looking at the 3D digital map. "My wife walked in and looked over my shoulder and she was the second person to know," he added.

The laser mapping technology, specifically light detection and ranging is used for the first time here for locating ancient ruins. This technology is actually used for military spying and to provide intelligence after earthquakes. However, there is no confirmation of the Lost City of Gold's existence.
