BlackBerry DTEK50 Review: Is The Phone's Security Features Overrated?

BlackBerry is set to have another attempt to make its comeback in the modern mobile era with BlackBerry DTEK50.

It can be recalled that last year, BlackBerry's Periv, its first-ever Android smartphone, was a flop. It failed to compete against smartphone giants Apple and Samsung. With hopes of redeeming itself, BlackBerry opted for a mid-priced handset which proclaims itself as "the world's most secure Android smartphone" today.

But can it really stand against the ever growing success of its competitors? Is the security feature that it boasts can live up to expectation? Or is it just mere overrated?

How Secure Is The DTEK50?

Claiming to be the "most secure" Android smartphone today, BlackBerry has included some security features in its latest flagship. However, some of the said security features are becoming increasingly standard in the Android operating system like the full disk encryption which the Marshmallow OS already has.

According to BlackBerry, the smartphone is manufactured with a proprietary technique that ensures the security of the device. For instance, DTEK 50's app notifies the user when the camera, microphone and location is being accessed.

On the other hand, one obvious security feature that lacks the newest smartphone is the fingerprint sensor. Instead, it uses an old school PIN, password, or pattern options.

Hardware And Software Specs

According to reports, the new DTEK50 is a replica of Alcatel's Idol 4. It has a 5.2-inch 1080p display and runs in with Qualcomm Snapdragon 617 processor, 3GB of RAM. It was also reported to have 16GB of storage expandable up to 2TB.

As for the camera, it will have a 13 megapixel auto-focus rear camera and an 8 megapixel front facing camera. It also has speakers both on the front and back of the device making it convenient to play music.

The DTEK50 comes with pre-loaded Android 6.0 Marshmallow and BlackBerry apps as Hub, Password Keeper, Calendar and BBM. Retail price is $299 which makes it a lot cheaper than its predecessor.

The Verdict

The latest addition to Android smartphones has a lot of promises to its prospective users. It's now only a matter of choice whether to buy it or not. Considering the price, the DTEK50 is quite a decent phone. But the claim of being the most secured smartphone might be a bit overrated.
