Apple Pencil support for the upcoming iPhone 7 would be great, but unfortunately it not seems to happen.
As the iPhone 7 is ready to be shipped in the U.S., an interesting question is whether or not the mobile device will offer Apple Pencil support. John Gruber, writing on Daring Fireball, notices that from the video interview of Tim Cook with NDTV's Vikram Chandra back in May we learn that amazing things can be created with the Apple Pencil.
It is true indeed that some great things could be potentially achieved with the Apple Pencil. The pressure sensitive stylus-like tool is one of the best digital writing and drawing implement ever seen in the industry.
Apple's 3D Touch
According to the online publication iMore, the tool made its debut alongside the 12.9-inch Apple iPad Pro and transformed the tablet into a true virtual art book. Apple announced, however, the iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus at the same event, both without support for the Apple Pencil support. Instead of offering support for the stylus-like tool, iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus introduced a different form of pressure sensitivity called 3D Touch.
The 3D Touch technology is using deformation of the screen itself to detect pressure alone, while Apple Pencil combines Bluetooth and sensors in a high resolution tool in order to transfer and interpret a while variety of data, including angle and pressure.
Given Apple Pencil's own unique way of detecting pressure, it is possible this does not work well together with the 3D Touch technology. It is likely that the larger iPad-size screens made it impossible to measure pressure accurately enough.
The Apple Pencil
If the Apple Pencil is placed next to an iPhone it becomes obvious how long the Apple Pencil is. The stylus on the Samsung Galaxy Note series is, by contrast, small enough for easy storage, sliding into the phone itself.
It seems that Apple designed the current Apple Pencil like a product matching the iPad's scale, rather than iPhone scale. It remains to be seen if and when the Apple Pencil will be adapted for the iPhone.
