Microsoft Expected to Unveil Windows Phone 8 Later Today

After unveiling the Surface tablet, hailed for excellent design and functional cover for the screen, the Redmond based company is expected to share officially for the first time what is coming in its next major phone operating system update, codenamed Apollo.

The one-day summit is going to come at Webcast on Microsoft's Channel 9, starting at 9 a.m. PT and according to numerous reports, Windows Phone 8 is expected to include improved hardware support for multi-core processors, four screen resolutions, and NFC radio support and a contact-less "wallet experience."

Microsoft is also expected to integrate its Skype app into Windows Phone 8, with native code support for developers and app-to-app communication support.

With new Windows Phone 8 handsets expected to arrive later this year, the rumors about revamped flexible infrastructure may come true at the Phone summit. According to Apple Insider reports, some analysts predict that sales of the Microsoft-powered wireless devices will outpace those of the iPhone by 2016.

The most current figures showed a 0.4 percent drop for smart phones running Windows Phone 7 during the month of April, though an expected fall 2012 launch for the Windows 8 ecosystem could drum up demand.

Update: Well as expected, the rumors came out to be true. Microsoft has announced the launch of Windows Phone 8, which will be released in the market by this fall.

Codenamed "Apollo," Windows Phone 8 will bring a refreshing platform to compete against the rivals by adding support for muti-core processors, higher screen resolutions and newer wireless technologies like near field communication (NFC). Also, the new OS will have a "shared core" with Windows 8.

Adding on further, Windows Phone 8 will also come with a new start screen with resizable tiles - double-wide, regular, and small.
