It has been a month since the release of Microsoft's Xbox One S and it turns out we were given but a taste of what next gen gaming would look like. According to Microsoft, its Project Scorpio is the most powerful console ever released to date - the creme de la creme of next gen gaming.
Why?
It's all in the upgrades. Microsoft asked, we chose, and they delivered. It's not going to have any exclusive games, instead, you can play the same games from an Xbox One or Xbox One S.
Compared to an Xbox One, which still struggles at 1,920x1080-pixel resolution (1080p), Project Scorpio is 4.5 times more powerful and can run the same games at ultra-high-def 4k resolution at an impressive 60 frames per second, and it is due to its 6 teraflops of power.
Sure, your Xbox One S can display 4k on your TV, but Project Scorpio can run games in 4k.
Some games dial down down their graphics whenever Xbox One can't handle the framerate; this is called dynamic scaling. However, with Project Scorpio these games will look consistently better than before; there won't be any need to throttle down.
Along with playing Xbox One games, Project Scorpio is compatible with Xbox One accessories.
This 4k feature however, will only work if you have a 4k TV. But Microsoft said the reason it's using such a powerful graphics chip is so it can drive a VR headset. No announcement has been made as to what headset will Microsoft use.
No price announcement has been disclosed. However, there is the possibility that Project Scorpio will be more expensive than the Xbox One S - which currently starts at $300, £250, or AU$400 for the 500GB model, and bounces up to $400, £350, or AU$549 for 2TB of storage.
If Project Scorpio becomes a success, Microsoft says it's betting on a future where you will never need to buy a new library of games. And this is becasue they've learned to listen to what the costumers wanted.
Project Scorpio is projected to be released by the end of 2017.
