The X factor: Microsoft Windows Phone 8 To Have Mobile Gaming Direct X

Just when you thought that Microsoft, with the introduction of Windows Phone 8, are fighting a lost battle against the likes of Apple and Google, the company has played their important trump card by declaring that Windows Phone 8 will have support for Microsoft’s DirectX.

Surprised? Imagine taking your “Crysis 2” gaming session on the road with just the Windows Phone handset in your pocket. That will soon become a reality with the introduction of DirectX supported Windows Phone 8.

DirectX is a set of proprietary APIs developers can use to build games for Windows. DirectX is, probably, the reason why Windows games so often look better than Mac games, and aren’t easily ported to the Mac. Microsoft actually built the Xbox to bring DirectX to the world of home consoles, and now it’s bringing that same expertise and experience to mobile.

Windows Phone 8 also shares a core with Windows 8. What this means is that developers can easily port games that use DirectX on Windows to the mobile platform. Although this doesn’t mean that we’ll see big games like “Crysis 2” or “Civilization V” on Windows Phone as soon as we would like to, but there is a strong possibility that we might eventually.

Obviously, games like “Angry Birds” and “Plants vs Zombies” provide excellent game time now and look amazing on our smart devices, but what about the prospects of a real major title like “Halo” running on our smartphones and tablets? Sounds thrilling, right!
