Paying tribute to the computer scientist and mathematician -- Alan Turing -- on his 100th birthday, Google has brought this creative and interactive Doodle on its homepage which displays a basic interpretation of the Turing Machine. The device was actually a hypothetical computing model that Turing proposed in 1936.
For all those who don’t know, a Turing machine is a device that manipulates symbols on a strip of tape according to a table of rules. Despite its simplicity, a Turing machine can be adapted to simulate the logic of any computer algorithm, and is particularly useful in explaining the functions of a CPU inside a computer.
A post on Google's official blog read: "Considering the role computers now play in everyday life, it's clear Turing's inventions rank among the most important intellectual breakthroughs of the 20th century."
How it works?
The Google Doodle Turing Machine gives you a series of binary numbers to match, by creating the correct program, using the buttons along the bottom. Each right answer makes another letter in the Google logo light up in color. Here is a YouTube video that shows all the answers, including the multiple levels. Try it, and see how you do!
This is not the first time that Google has created a playable Doodle that celebrates the contributions by the legends and historians of the world.
