Sony PlayStation 4's total dominance among the current generation of video game consoles has fans and analysts praising the gaming company. However, company insiders have a different take especially in the wake of Sony's recent launch of its PlayStation 4 (PS4) Pro.
Sony's division chief Andrew House said that Sony is committed to keeping gamers within the PS4 eco-system and the only way the company could do that is to release a device that has a higher graphics engine.
Chief House told Bloomberg that Sony's leadership saw ahead that they must release a version of the PS4 with greater specifications that can rival PC games. They believe that even long-time fans and supporters of the console can be lured to shift to PC gaming, which traditionally has been ahead of consoles in video game graphics quality.
House believes that Sony wants to narrow the difference between PS4 console gaming and PC gaming through its release of the PS4 Pro.
"I saw some data that really influenced me. It suggested that there's a dip mid-console lifecycle where the players who want the very best graphical experience will start to migrate to PC, because that's obviously where it's to be had," he stated.
House further said that Sony's streaming game service, PlayStation Now, which both PS4 and PC gamers can access, will also take on a greater role in Sony's bid to establish total dominance of console gaming over PC gaming.
Speaking with The Guardian, House said, "Our feeling is that while physical media continues to be a big part of the games business, but we see a trend on video towards streaming. Certainly with our user base, it's the second biggest use case for people's time on the system so we place more emphasis on that area."
House further told the publication that new Netflix and YouTube apps will be accessible in the PS4 Pro which in turn will provide consumers UHD 4K content. The Netflix partnership will include the highly anticipated "Luke Cage" series from Marvel, and the second season of crime drama "Narcos."
