YouTube Arrives on PlayStation Vita

PlayStation Vita, which arrived in February, offered a small but decent number of applications like Facebook, Twitter, Netflix and Skype. Now the exciting new handheld has received the much desired and long awaited YouTube app.

The YouTube app, which is currently available as a free download from the Playstation Store, will contain most of the core functionality the service offers on other handheld devices. Moreover, apart from watching videos, you can search the YouTube database for specific videos, leave comments and even receive video recommendations from YouTube.

The Vita, impressively, also supports high-definition video playback, up to 720p, and videos can be watched in either full screen or small screen modes. The latter option gives you access to the toolbar buttons, including Favorites, Like and Dislike, and Flag, as well as the ability to view video information and read comments.

However, note that the Vita is still lacking the ability to let you comment on other people’s comments, which is quite important if you are a regular YouTube visitor, and also the ability to record videos and upload them directly from your Vita is still not available. It is also not known if the Vita users will experience the problem where some videos are not viewable due to restrictions set by the content creator, which often results in an error message popping up.

But excluding everything that could have been or would have been, this will be the first time that Vita owners will get to enjoy YouTube on the device, as the native web browser still doesn’t support video playback. Only time will tell how the YouTube on Vita will fare.
