Jim Carrey is finding himself in the spotlight once again, but this time, it is no laughing matter as he is being sued by his former partner's ex-husband.
Just a year ago, Carrey's girlfriend, Cathriona White was found dead in her Los Angeles apartment. Her toxicology report found a deadly mix of drugs in her system which was pain killers, beta blockers, and a sleep aid. Her death was ruled as a suicide by drug overdose.
That seemed to be the end of that until recent reports surfaced that the comedian might have wielded some of his influence in obtaining the painkillers for his girlfriend.
The lawsuit was filed by a certain Mark Burton, who was the husband of Cathriona White. According to Yahoo, White was still married to burton during her on and off relationship with the movie star.
According to Variety, Mark Burton's attorney, Michael Avenatti said in a statement:
"Our client, Mr. Burton, is seeking justice in connection with the death of his wife," he said "What he is seeking is a search for the truth. We believe that Mr. Carrey has culpability in the death of Ms. White."
According to the complainant's suit, Carrey used his fame and money to obtain some illegal prescription drugs under the pseudonym, Arthur King. The suit also alleges that the comedian still gave the drugs to his girlfriend despite being fully aware of her history of depression.
If found guilty, Carrey will be violating the state's Drug Dealer Liability Act.
They will also try to state that the comedian was highly controlling and manipulative towards his girlfriend and also attempted to cover up his involvement with the illegal acquisition of the prescription drugs.
Carrey on the other has already released a statement regarding this, calling the whole finger pointing "a terrible shame."
