Logitech Solar-Powered Keyboard Folio for iPad: Advantages & Drawbacks

One of the greatest features that drew attention to Microsoft's recently announced Surface tablet was its keyboard cover, as it offered more convenience and functionality. Logitech, however, has its own gadget to deliver the same convenience, and it uses solar power to charge. Logitech's solar-powered keyboard case is designed to embrace Apple's iPad 2 or the new iPad like a book cover.

While Apple has many keyboard case solutions, charging the gadget without the need of yet another charger is a big plus. Logitech's solution has no AC charger and no hole for an adapter either. It is made of plastic, it is wide enough, and provides a comfortable typing experience.

Logitech's case also has an automatic pairing process, meaning the keyboard will turn on and start pairing as soon as you insert an iPad into the shell bonded to the Folio case and bend it into keyboard position. Some users may not be so comfortable without a backup USB charging option, but Logitech said Folio will last for up to two years on a single full charge, with two hours of typing per day. Charging can take up to six hours in dim light, but it is "much faster" in brighter light. One drawback, however, is that there is no charge-status indicator to know when it is fully charged.

The Keyboard Folio can sit in two positions: keyboard mode, i.e. normal, and a more reclined mode (about 45 degrees) for viewing media. The iPad covers all the keyboard keys except the row at the bottom, and the keys can switch function to media-control buttons. This will allow users to use the arrow keys to control volume and fast-forward/rewind, and the space bar to play and pause.

Meanwhile, the gadget's $129 price tag and its rather flimsy outer case design are other drawbacks. The case looks good when the Folio is closed flat or opened into keyboard mode, but any other position in between makes it look loose. Also, the placement of the solar panel may raise a few concerns, as it is covered in flexible plastic that scratches very easily and favors dust collection.
