Opera has finally launched a free built-in VPN service into its desktop internet browser.
Opera's VPN Feature
According to PCMag, with the introduction of free built-in VPN service, Opera became the first major desktop web browser to offer this feature. Web surfers that are concerned about their privacy online and security-conscious can now use Opera's free and unlimited virtual private network via the desktop browser.
Krystian Kolondra, senior vice president of Opera browser for computers, declared in a statement that most internet users would use a VPN if they would know how the internet truly works. The VPN service in Opera desktop browser creates a secure connection to the Netherlands, Canada, US, Singapore or Germany, providing online security and privacy as well as easy access to certain content available on location basis.
In order to take advantage of this feature, users just have to download the Opera for computers browser from the company's website, then navigate to Preferences on Mac or Settings on PC. There users have to select free VPN under the Privacy & Security setting. In order to activate the private network and choose a preferred location users have to click on the icon labeled "VPN" that will appear to the left of the address field.
Users who are unsure of where to route their online operations can let the browser select the optimal server based on network location, latency, speed and capacity by turning on automatic location mode. Kolondra explained that the free and easy to use VPN service is an essential tool for those internet users concerned about online safety and privacy.
The new Opera browser is powered by the company's subsidiary SurfEasy and utilizes a secure 256-bit AES encrypted connection. The browser is not storing a user's browsing history. According to PCWorld, Opera's VPN service is an independent company that is operating under Canadian privacy laws.
The launch of Opera VPN service on desktop browser follows the release in April of free VPN on the developer edition of its browser. In May, Opera released free VPN on its Android and iOS mobile browsers.
