Sony has confirmed that it will add PlayStation Classics support to the PS Vita in the upcoming firmware version 1.8 update. The update is set to arrive sometime this summer.
This new PS Classics support for PS VITA will allow gamers to play games like “Final Fantasy VII,” “Ridge Racer Type 4,” “Vagrant Story” and more, on PS VITA's screen.
"You can enjoy the games that were released in the past on the PC Engine and PlayStation, in version 1.80 on PS Vita," stated the Sony press release.
No specific dates have been provided for when we can expect the firmware to arrive, other than the already mentioned "summer" release window. Only recently, Sony Computer Entertainment's CEO Andrew House stated that the Vita is not in need of re-evaluation but the company needs "to put more emphasis on the kinds of experiences that define and differentiate" the portable.
Currently PS VITA owners are on firmware v1.69 and it is expected that Sony will skip v1.7 and will directly release firmware v1.8, according to a Gamepur report.
The version 1.8 firmware update was mentioned during Sony's announcement of the PlayStation 2 Game Archives service for PlayStation 3.
