On Thursday, General Motors Co. introduced the new 2018 Chevy Equinox to a small group of 200 dealers and members of the media. For the first time in North America, a turbocharged diesel variant of the crossover will be available. Despite this, the unit is lighter, as a whole.
The Promise Of General Motors
As Detroit News reports, General Motors has promised a lot of new features with the upcoming Chevy Equinox, which will be available in the US starting in spring.
"We needed to develop a vehicle that allowed them to check off every box," Alan Batey, company president, said. "They're looking for technology, they're looking for safety and a beautiful design in a versatile efficient package. The new Equinox, I promise, delivers on all fronts."
Three Engine Variants
Ultimately, there are three options that interested buyers can choose from and it depends on the kind of engine they are looking to work with. The 2018 Equinox can come in a 1.5 liter turbo, a 2.0 liter turbo that is mated with a new 9 speed automatic transmission and a .6 liter turbo-diesel.
Design Review
The upcoming vehicle is four inches shorter than its predecessor and is an estimated 400 pounds lighter. As Freep notes, that's 10 percent of the original weight. Despite this, however, there is noticeably more interior space.
Chevy's 2018 Equinox sports an instrument panel that is positioned downwards and away. The lowered windshield panel also allows for a wider and better view. It also provides more comfort for rear passengers as buttom cushions slide upwards when the back of the seats are lowered.
"Customers who previewed the vehicle early on had a strong emotional response to the sleek and sophisticated exterior design," John Cafaro, executive director of GM Design, said. "Those same themes are carried through to the interior, making the space beautifully intuitive."
Safety Features
The Chevy 2018 Equinox has a Teen Driver feature, which allows parents to put restrictions on the unit, as well as surround vision, forward collision alert and a new low-speed forward automatic emergency braking.
