Google is broadening its horizon as it recently opened its Daydream VR SDK platform to developers. Daydream may be ambitious but still it is an innovative move. Daydream can be experienced though only by those with Daydream-ready phones and headset.
Google partnered with developers to do a test and to try to connect Daydream with gaming.
Google revealed Daydream at Google I/O earlier this year. The tech giant also announced that it will be creating a Daydream Virtual Reality headset. Google Daydream headset almost looks like Samsung Gear VR.
This week Google announced that it teamed up with Unity to create a technical preview of Daydream VR. According to Android Headlines, the technical preview is meant to help developers learn more about Daydream VR and how they can coordinate games with virtual reality.
What Can You Do With Daydream VR?
Daydream platform is linked to software Android 7.0 (Nougat), in order to turn the users' favorite applications to virtual reality. The applications that can be incorporated with VR are: Netflix, Hulu, HBO, Imax, MLB, the NBA, CNN, The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal and games created by Ubisoft and Electronic Arts.
Daydream-ready phones will be available in the next few months. What brands are coordinating with Daydream VR? Samsung, HTC, Asus, LG, Huawei, Alcatel and Xiaomi have included Google Daydream VR with their phones.
For now the only handset that can handle the SDK is the Nexus 6P. Yet still, it's not totally ready for the platform. The device is likely to run very hot and "thermally throttle CPU and GPU performance after a short period of use, depending on workload," as per Google's developer kit setup. Google also stated, "Daydream will come with a home launcher and storefront for VR content."
Updates With Daydream VR
The technical preview of Daydream VR will be updated from time to time with latest news from Google and Unity. Google and Unity will still decide when they will release the product commercially.
"The SDK is now available to all via the Daydream developer website and supports integrated asynchronous reprojection, high fidelity spatialized audio and interactions using the Daydream controller," said Nathan Martz, product manager of Google.
With Google Daydream, the company is poised to compete with the likes of Oculus Rift and HTC Vive.
