Amazon is said to be developing its own smartphone.
According to Bloomberg, "people with knowledge of the matter" informed them about the world's biggest online retailer's present plan of launching its own smartphone range and is in touch with Foxconn.
While no more information about the features and release date of the phone have been provided as of now, it confirms that Amazon is trying to build wireless technology patent portfolio to keep its upcoming device free from the patent infringement allegations.
The upcoming Amazon smartphone is expected to feature Android OS. But the company launched a completely modified and customized version of Android OS with its Kindle Fire tablet. A similar modified version of Ice Cream Sandwich (or Jelly Bean maybe) can be expected to be seen in the new phone.
Moreover, Amazon currently runs its own Appstore for Android that allows user to access apps for the Kindle Fire and a curated selection for devices from other manufacturers. Along with that, Amazon has its own app store and a robust collection of books, music, movies and more.
While Amazon lacks brand name in the smartphone market, with its mammoth content from its store and an attractive price tag, it might be able to re-create the magic it did with the launch of Kindle Fire tablet last year. What do you think?
