There has been much ado about the lack of endgame content to be found in the dungeons of Diablo 3, and rather than sharpen their axes and wade into battle in defense of their hugely popular game, Blizzard has instead admitted as much; and that users should probably get used to it.
"...this is not World of Warcraft, we aren't going to be able to add new content every couple of months" stated Diablo 3 community manager Micah "Bashiok" Whiple in a forum posting in response to criticism of the game's failing end game enjoyment.
And true enough, Diablo 3 is not an MMORPG with what is expected to be an ever evolving and expanding world over several years, eventually focused on providing players who have reached the level cap with ever more elaborate challenges to overcome.
Diablo 3 is in fact a game with a fairly linear progression that takes you through various difficulty levels before reaching its conclusion. This is not unexpected, nor does it in any way break with the mold of the previous two games. You can continue playing for the fun of it and enjoy the thrill of seeking more loot, or you can accept that it's over, that you've essentially seen all that there is to see, and move on.
Yet even after 350 hours of playing time (as per the thread starter), some players expect the game should continue to provide new experiences and stay fresh. While that seems like a stretch, it's not as if Blizzard has stopped updating or expanding the game, and they do have some potentially big aces up their sleeves.
"We have some ideas for progression systems, but honestly it's a huge feature if we want to try to do it right, and not something we could envision being possible until well after 1.1(PvP Arena Patch) which it itself still a ways out" stated Whiple in the same post.
Do enraged players have a point? Should a game with such a massive amount of players enjoy more robust content updates? Or do players need to accept that Diablo 3 isn't an MMO, and that it's a little much to expect a game to continue providing endless fun and replayability after literally hundreds of hours spent with it?
