'Captain America: Civil War' News, Updates: Marvel Studios Campaigns For Film As Oscar Contender

"Captain America: Civil War" was a billion-dollar smash hit for Marvel. Directed by the brother duo Anthony and Joe Russo and starring the likes of Chris Evans, Robert Downey Jr. and Scarlett Johansson, the film earned the praise of fans and critics alike.

Reports claim that the great success of the film both as a commercial product and as a work of art perhaps may give it an Oscar award, which Marvel has been striving to achieve in its past films.

According to Heroic Hollywood, Disney's Marvel Studios has officially submitted "Captain America: Civil War" as a possible Oscar contender.

The Disney-owned studio screened the film to critics to help accumulate word-of-mouth attention which the studio hopes can sway the decision of awards organizations and critics associations.

This won't be the first time that Marvel has aspired to earn an Oscar for its superhero-themed films. It also previously submitted for consideration the films "Guardians of the Galaxy," the "Iron Man Trilogy," and "Captain America: The Winter Soldier." The three films have been nominated in the Oscar's "Best Visual Effects category."

However, Marvel has never gone beyond the nomination stage. It is pinning its hopes to "Civil War" to end the studio's Oscar drought.

The studio is likely trying to do what the classic hit and financially successful "Lord of the Rings" trilogy accomplished during its run. LOTR both won at the box office and took home several Oscar awards.

Heroic Hollywood speculates that "Civil War" has a high chance of being nominated and probably even winning this year having earned the thumbs up of both audiences and critics. The film received a 90% Rotten Tomatoes score and earned $1.1 billion dollars in the box office.

"Civil War" has all the makings of an award winning film but fans needs to wait for the Academy Awards to see if it will finally take home an Oscar.
