It has been revealed that the Cali Cartel will take over in "Narcos" Season 3. With the success of its previous installments, fans of the show have high hopes with the new subject of the show.
"Narcos" Season 3: The Cali Cartel Takes Center Stage
The notorious group Cali Cartel has made their debut in "Narcos" Season 2 with members Gilberto Orejuela (Damian Alcazar) and Miguel Rodriguez (Fransisco Denis) with Helmer "Pancho" Herrera (Alberto Ammann). Another member of the gang, Jose "Chepe" Santacruz-Londono, is expected to be introduced in "Narcos" Season 3.
In an interview with the series' executive producer Eric Newman, he compared Pablo Escobar and the Cali Cartel's methods in running their drug business.
"Unlike Escobar, who had positioned himself as an outlaw, Cali was very much a part of the system. They had bought their way in and they enjoyed a different kind of protection than Pablo did. Pablo was protected by the people who loved him and Cali was protected by a political and economic system that they had rather ingeniously built."
With this, "Narcos" Season 3 is expected to be less violent and more political than its predecessor. In addition, the Cali Cartel's arc is more likely to be covered in one season only since the group's drug-smuggling operation was taken down in two years. According to reports, this will signal the emergence of the Mexican cartel in season 4.
"We purposely did not call the show Pablo Escobar or Medellin. In the same way that Osama Bin Laden begets ISIS, Medellin begets Cali begets the Mexican Cartels. Though they existed at the same time, Cali really got the Mexicans into cocaine, which proved to be a much better business than heroin." Newman said when asked about the show's future seasons.
"Narcos" Season 3 : What Will Be Jose Peña's Role?
Meanwhile, many speculate the possible return of Jose Peña (Pedro Pascal) in "Narcos" Season 3. It can be recalled that in season 2, Peña was assigned in Escobar's case by the DEA. However, the agency pulled him back even before the drug kingpin was arrested.
According to reports, the real-life Javier Peña confirmed that he did not take part in the Cali Cartel's case. This led to speculations as to what will be his role in case he returns in "Narcos" Season 3.
"I'd probably have to look at what Peña's role would be in the Cali, in taking down Cali," Newman said in an interview. "I love working with Pedro Pascal, so nothing would make me happier than to be back in business with him in some way," he added.
For now, fans can re-watch "Narcos" Season 2 as the show is still streaming on Netflix.
