The Legendary Pictures has closed a deal with HBO's "True Detective" star Adria Arjona to join the "Pacific Rim 2" cast alongside John Boyega, Scott Eastwood, Jing Tian and Cailee Spaeny.
The sequel to the 2013 sci-fi film "Pacific Rim" has been releasing a substantial number of casting for the past month. Latest reports presume the movie cast to be growing more diverse, with all the quick, consecutive character announcements during its pre-production stage. Arjona is the most recent star confirmed to join the cast of "Pacific Rim 2," according to Deadline.
Arjona's role is currently undisclosed, with teasers soon to be released as the film production progresses. Apart from joining the film, the 24-year-old actress is also set to headline a new TV series titled "Emerald City," taking the role of Dorothy Gale in the Wizard of Oz story retelling. Arjona recently starred in "True Detective" in a substantial role.
Other stars previously revealed to appear in the "Pacific Rim" sequel are "Star Wars" actor John Boyega starring as Stacker Pentecost's son, singer Cailee Spaeny also as a lead star in an undisclosed role, and Levi Meaden. Meanwhile, original star Rinko Kikuchi's return is yet to be announced. Unfortunately, reports revealed that the previous film's lead star Charlie Hunnam would not return for the sequel due to scheduling conflicts.
"Pacific Rim 2" storyline will take place after the events from the first film. A number of reports mentioned early on that the sequel would explore more of the Kaiju's (monsters) origins through the inter-dimensional portal at the bottom of the Pacific Ocean. New Jaegers and fighting technology are also said to surprise audiences, according to movie leaks. The first movie of the franchise hit sales gross of more than $410 million at the worldwide box office in 2013.
The sequel is yet to begin production this November, with filming set in Australia and partly in China. The sequel based on a world created by Guillermo del Toro and Travis Beacham will be given life by director Steven S. DeKnight.
"Pacific Rim 2," with the working title "Pacific Rim: Maelstrom," will hit theaters worldwide on Feb. 23, 2018 under the production of Universal Pictures and Legendary Pictures.
