In Kiefer Sutherland's recent interview, the actor explained what happened 25 years ago and why Julia Roberts decided to cancel their wedding just days before. Talking about it now, the actor praises Roberts for having the courage to do so and said "I think she was being realistic for herself. I think that's much better."
In an interview in "The Jess Cagle Interview", the actor reminisced the moment when he was engaged with the actress after just months of dating. He comments on Roberts calling off the wedding just day's before saying "I think she had courage. It wasn't what she wanted to do in the end. And I think it took a lot of courage, in amongst all of that other stuff, to be able to say, I can't do this."
The two have met in 1990 on the set of "Flatliners" and eventually got engaged. Their wedding was set to happen in the summer of 1991 until Roberts decided to call off the wedding and allegedly ran off with the actor's friend, Jason Patric, to Ireland. This has caused a big controversy to the actress for starting a new romance too soon after the wedding. The actor has not given any comment regarding Patric.
The actor also explained what could have gone wrong in their relationship and said "We were both young, and we were both very much in love, we had decided that we wanted to get married, but then this other thing kind of took over," The actor explained that she was probably the most famous woman in the world and a wedding that was supposed to be just between them became "Something so big..."
After their breakup, Sutherland got married in 1996 with Kelly Winn but separated in 1999. In 2000, he dated Bo Derek. As for Roberts, she got married in 1993 with Lyle Lovett but also separated in 1995. After that, she dated Benjamin Bratt for 3 years. Today, she is happily married to Danny Moder and gave birth to 3 children.
