Smartphone Era Continues: Android Goes Strong, Windows Phone Struggles in the US: Nielsen

U.S. cell phone users are increasingly becoming smart in terms of their choice of phone as two out of three Americans chose a smartphone instead of a feature phone in the last three months, a recent Nielsen report reveals.

According to the report, smartphone penetration in the U.S. is still increasing and market for smartphone increased from February's 49.7 percent to 54.9 percent in June. The report also reveals that till date Google's Android is doing the best business in the U.S. as about 51.8 percent of American smartphone owners currently own an Android device. Apple iPhone comes to the second spot with 34.3 percent and RIM comes third with 8.1 percent of BlackBerry users.

In last three month, Nielsen found around 54.6 percent of the smartphone buyers selected Android handsets whereas iOS platform opted for about 36.3 percent and only 4 percent bought a Blackberry. But overall, Apple has the highest manufacturer's share with 34 percent while Samsung (17 percent), HTC (14 percent), and Motorola (11 percent) take away most of the Android share.

As per the report, while Microsoft is struggling to make an impact in the market, its old Windows Mobile platform is still doing better business with three percent market share than the new Windows 7's 1.3 percent. Nielsen also found that despite Microsoft's close allies with Nokia, most of the Windows Phone users are opting for Samsung or HTC devices.
