The pink Nokia Lumia 900 hits AT&T on Sunday, July 15, and it comes with a surprise: a $50 price cut, reducing the phone's price tag to just $50 on contract. The news first came from WPCentral, according to which an AT&T employee had already confirmed the price cut, and the reduction will apply to the Lumia 900 of all shades. It is now official that the handset is down to $49.99 on AT&T with a contract.
Should the price cut occur, the white, black, cyan blue, and pink Nokia Lumia 900 handsets will all be available for just $50 on contract. AT&T has been offering the smartphone for $99.99 on contract since March. Meanwhile, Amazon has an even more tempting offer, selling the phone for a penny on contract, far cheaper than AT&T's price.
The carrier-exclusive pink Nokia Lumia 900 which launches on Sunday, July 15, is the same Windows phone that has been available since earlier this year on AT&T. The handset sports a 4.3-inch WVGA ClearBlack display, a 1.4GHz single-core processor, an 8MP camera, as well as support for AT&T's 4G LTE (long-term evolution) high speed data network. Microsoft, however, will not be honoring the Lumia 900 with the Windows Phone 8 Apollo update.
The software giant has recently announced that current Windows Phone devices will not receive the full-fledged update to Windows Phone 8 software, but some handsets will instead receive Windows Phone 7.8, a stripped-down version of Windows Phone 8. The Windows Phone 7.8 update will be coming to select devices, and the Lumia 900 will likely receive it as well at some point. Neither AT&T nor Nokia, however, have confirmed anything.
Although Windows Phone 7.8 is not the full-fledged update, it will bring three main features of Windows 8. It will come with a new start screen that will look just like the Windows 8 start screen, and the update will also bring tile customization with support for three tile sizes. The Windows Phone 7.8 update will be delivered directly, and will not be rolled out by individual carriers.
The Nokia Lumia smartphones have not been as popular as Nokia and Microsoft had hoped, as they have merely sold about 330,000 units in the country. The price cut seems like an effort to attract more buyers into purchasing the handset in light of the rather disappointing sales figures. Still, the device has been the No. 3 AT&T smartphone on Amazon Wireless.
