Everyone knows the phenomenon of trying to hold your breath underwater - and yes this is a reference to Francis Copolla's quote about being a vampire - at first it's okay and as time goes on it gets harder and harder to breath, much like the bloodlust. With DONTNOD Entertainment's upcoming title called "Vampyr", you play as Jonathan Reid a doctor-turned vampire who will be facing the same predicament and they recently released new gorgeous screenshots of the game.
Take a look!
DONTNOD Entertainment's New Masterpiece
If the previous success of 'Life is Srange' tells us anything, it is that DONTNOD Entertainment doesn't pull any punches when it comes to storytelling and player immersion. The differences though between their last masterpiece and the new one is the incorporation of a combat system. In the action RPG game 'Vampyr', players step into the shoes of Jonathan Reid in 1918 London during the bout of the Spanish Flu. A doctor who just recently came back from the war, he wakes up in the midst of a mass grave - a vampire. On his mission to discover the truth behind his new "affliction", Jonathan will face foes and friends as well as Vampire Hunters and 'mutated abominations'.
In an interview with head writer Stéphane Beauverger, when asked where the idea came from he said, "From the outset we wanted to make a game that made players face tough choices, and from that came the setting and the gameplay. 'Cause it was a setting that we believe plays to our strengths as a studio. As for references for vampires, Dracula of course, but also other gothic horror stories like Frankenstein. Anne Rice works such as 'Interview With A Vampire' is a favorite of mine as well that helped influence the game."
Combat System Revealed
They also revealed their combat system and how it incorporates in the game. Jonathan will be armed with an array of conventional melee and ranged weaponry as well as the ability to attack and dodge. His vampire powers can be used when his Blood Gauge is filled up. And according to and interview with developers DONTNOD Entertainment, the more you kill the powerful you get, and this is where players will find themselves at "impassess." Whether they choose morality over power is thoroughly up to them.
When asked about how leveling works within the game, Stéphane Beauverger said that the players have the choice to fight and do quests but you gain much more experience when you take a life - "draining a citizen of their life force the way a vampire would. It is much more rewarding and risky than just fighting enemies as each time you take a life, there is weight to your decision. I think this is very new as you can level up easily just by feeding on people. It is part of the vampire nature and what the project is really about."
A non linear-skill tree will unlock through experience as the player gains new and more powerful attacks. With each progress the player has the ability to choose to equip these abilitites anytime and allow them to create their own archetypes to match their play style. Players can either play aggressively or stealthly (I always lean heavily toward stealth at every game), the coice depends entirely upon them
How Avant-Garde
