Android ICS Not Arriving For HTC Desire HD

The news that the highly admired HTC Desire HD won't receive an official update to Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich has caused quite a stir. The Taiwanese company, however, has posted the reasons for the decision in its blog. The biggest issue, according to HTC, has been the risk of users losing their personal data during the update process.

As per HTC, due to the larger size of the ICS update, the internal space of the Desire HD would have to be repartitioned in order to get the ICS on board, and although some "advanced" users might find this solution acceptable, many other customers simply would not.

HTC, however, also considered some ways to reduce the size of the software package which, unfortunately, impacts features and functionality and has some other technical limitations that negatively impacts the user experience. The company also noted that this is indeed a change from their previous statement and said that they are truly sorry. (Is this excuse for real?)

“We believe an update should always improve the user experience and carefully evaluate each update based on this criteria. While we are very aware of the disappointment from this decision, we believe the impact to user experience was too great. We recognize this is a change from our previous statement and for that we’re truly sorry,” the company said in a post.

However, as always, help is on the way. The XDA community has already made available for the Desire HD an ICS ROM based on Cyanogenmod 9 and a Jelly Bean ROM, based on the beta Cyanogenmod 10.
