EXO fans have one good reason to celebrate this week. Lay, the first EXO member to have a solo debut, has released "What U Need" track ahead of his solo album's release. The music video also teases the theme of the idol's second track or the album itself.
"What U Need" was released Friday, Oct. 7 in celebration of Lay's (Zhang Yixing) birthday and as gift to fans. The song was unveiled in Korea through various music platforms while a Chinese version of the song will be distributed through Ali Music. The track is very special as the idol reportedly had a very active participation in every aspect of the track's production. The EXO member serves as co-composer and co-lyricist of the song and was also involved in planning and design as well as the dance choreography.
"While preparing for his solo debut, Lay will reveal the new song 'What U need' on his birthday, October 7, as a gift for all the fans who are waiting for his solo debut. It is a birthday present for all of you," Lay's representative wrote on the Chinese micro-blogging site Weibo, cited International Business Times.
The track oozes a bright, funky, feeling. It has an upbeat melody and charismatic dance moves. The music video, however, ends on a cliffhanger with Lay coming out of his car feeling rather different. He staggered as he comes forward to the camera, the video got shaky and his eyes turned red. The video flashed the words "Lose control" which might be the title of the next track or the title of the album itself. The last scenes hint something rather supernatural which may be the theme for the next track. Lay will perform the song live during the Asia Song Festival 2016 in Busan on Sunday, Oct. 9.
Meanwhile, like his fellow EXO member D.O., Lay also has other individual acting projects. These include the upcoming multi-lingual action-adventure comedy film "Kung Fu Yoga" starring Jackie Chan, and Chinese-South Korean romantic comedy film "Unexpected Love" alongside f(x)'s Krystal.
