Google's Self-Made Hardware Opens Shop In New York

Google joins its competitors Apple and Microsoft in New York City as it opens its new shop. It is ready to take the risk of positioning itself to a store-to-store competition with Apple stores.

Days after its Oct. 4 event, Google is opening a pop-up shop on Oct. 20 called "Made by Google." The tech giant didn't reveal much about the shop, but it did say that it will be located in 96 Spring St., New York. It is called a pop-up store because its setup is temporary. The store is mainly a location to promote its own-brand hardware, Pixel, Pixel XL, Daydream View, Google Home and Google Wifi.

Setting up a physical store isn't a brand new thing for Google. In fact, the tech giant has opened pilot stores before on locations where they gauge the new hardware's performance in the retail. The challenging thing for Google now is its stated new focus on being a hardware business.

"One of the most important messages of today is that Google is taking hardware very seriously," Brindle said. "What we've seen with the Android ecosystem is that the pace of innovation there is amazing - there are now 1.4 billion daily users on Android. However, this is not about bringing the best of Android to our users - it's about bringing the best of Google to our users. So that's taking in all of the investments and research that we're doing around AI and ML, and packaging it front to back in hardware," he added.

Google should take its focus on the customer experience on the devices it offers. Opening Pop-up shops helps Google to see the actual experience of its customers and how it welcomes its products Pixel giving them room for innovation or improvement.
