Google Drive, Dropbox, Github Blocked in Turkey

Privacy is the main concern of anyone around the world. It is very threatening when one discovers what is on his storage. Turkey recently made sure that its citizens' privacy will be protected especially for those who are in the government by blocking cloud platforms such as Google Drive, Dropbox and Github.

Why Did Turkey Block Cloud Storages?

Turkey first blocked Microsoft OneDrive for leaking the private emails of Berat Albayrak, the son-in-law of Turkey's Energy Minister and President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, in a report on MS Power User.

Now, it seems that OneDrive is not the only cloud storage that is prohibited by Turkey. According to The Next Web, Google Drive, Dropbox and GitHub are also now on the list of banned cloud storages in the country.

An organization called Turkey Blocks, a monitoring group, filed the banning of cloud storages to prevent people from using these sites in their accounts and making it available for the whole world to see and to snoop on.

Redhack, the hackers responsible for the entire leakage of emails dated from April 2000 to the end of September 2016. There are 57,623 emails or 17GB of emails that were released to the public's eye. Investigation was arranged by the Ankara court to find out who is responsible for the leakage.

In a separate incident, Dropbox have been hacked before and the hackers were able to encrypt 68 million passwords and login from its users account. With the help of Leakhouse, it reported what happened with the accounts registered in the said storage.

Google, Dropbox, Microsoft OneDrive and GitHub have not yet commented on the matter. However, Turkey Blocks have recently announced that the block on Google Drive has been lifted.

Turkey's History Of Blocking Cloud Storages

Since Turkey wants to limit the information regarding its government online, it blocked WikiLeaks last July for posting about the political issues in the country. Availability of Twitter and Facebook were removed by the government after the explosion of a car last March.

Turkey is taking drastic measures to keep its political affairs a secret and kept within the country, though this will affect a huge chunk of the population.
