Google is working quite hard on its Play Store. While it was reported earlier that the company is looking to introduce gift cards and wishlists to the service, a new report states that Google has now enabled the eagerly-anticipated smart app updates that were revealed at the Google I/O.
The new smart updates, also known as delta updates, could turn out to be one of the most important features Google has introduced till date. Basically, when an update to an application comes out, the Play Store downloads it in full, which with large apps and slow connections can get quite problematic. However, this is where smart app updates come in as a solution. When enabled, only the incremental difference between the old and new apks would be sent over the wire. This process would save huge amounts of data for both Google and Play Store users.
In reality, the delta updates are the same sort of thing Apple introduced with its firmware updates in iOS 5. Finally, the best thing about it? Users don’t even require the latest Play Store update for this feature to work. Check out the videos below.
