Nikon Android-Powered Camera Coolpix S800c Coming - Indicate Leaked Images

Before Nikon could make any official announcement, few purported press images of its upcoming Android-powered camera appeared on the Internet on Monday Aug. 20.

According to Nikon Rumors, which released the images, the camera will be named Nikon Coolpix S800c and sport a 3.5-inch OLED display, 4.5-54 mm lens, and Android 2.3 Gingerbread with access to Google Play apps. The camera will also have built-in GPS for geo-tagging and Wi-Fi connectivity for easy uploading and sharing of images. Moreover, Nikon Rumors indicates that the company may release not one but two different versions of the smart camera.

The report also claims that the Nokia Coolpix S800c camera will be officially announced on Aug. 22.

Earlier this month, Nikon Rumors, citing Indonesian Communication Agency filing (filed on July 31, 2012), also reported the release date of Nokia's first Android-powered smart camera - Coolpix S800 or S800c - to be Aug. 22.

Although, Coolpix S800 will be Nikon's first smart camera, other manufactures like Polaroid and Panasonic have already displayed their Android-powered cameras. Polaroid displayed its SC1630 Smart Camera at this year's Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in January. The Tokyo-based optics and imaging company will be the first to release the Android-powered camera. Panasonic too, in March, announced that the company is looking into the possibilities of a smart camera running Android, but said it was concerned about potential warranty issues.

Additionally, Samsung, the current smartphone global leader, has also expressed that it's keen on introducing Android OS in its upcoming cameras. While the company has never made any official announcement, it filed a "Galaxy Camera" trademark in February.
