Nintendo 3DS to 3DS XL Data Transfer – How To (Tutorial)

The Nintendo 3DS XL has finally arrived in the U.S., and many of you are waiting to get your hands on it. However, the fun doesn't really begin even after you own one, as there are bound to be a certain set of hoops (similar to any consumer electronic product) that you will need to sidestep.

One of the most common things that you will want to do is play your old games on the new system, but have no idea how to go forward. Fortunately, you will just need to follow a simple guide to transfer your old games to the new XL.

However, before we start, take note of the data that can be transferred. These include:

  • Nintendo DSiWare:Nintendo DSiWare and any associated save data, which is stored in the system memory will be transferred
  • Nintendo eShop Account History and Balance:The Nintendo eShop accounts of the two systems will now be integrated into one and will be situated on the new system. The balances of the two accounts will be added together. Additionally, all previous downloads from both accounts will be available
  • Save data of pre-installed software:The following will be moved to the target system: friend list, photos in Nintendo 3DS Camera, Nintendo 3DS Sound files, Mii characters from Mii Maker, and StreetPass Mii Plaza data.
  • Nintendo DS software settings:Any settings connected to Nintendo DS software (like internet connection settings) will also be transferred.
  • SD Card data:The process will not transfer SD card data. However, data stored on the original console's SD Card can be used once the transfer is over. This data can be used easily by removing the SD Card from the original and inserting it into the new system.

Important: Please remember that the data that was on the original system will be deleted after the transfer, and you can only transfer your data up to five times.

Here are the steps:

  • Turn on both the devices.
  • From the Home Menu on both systems, select "System Settings", then "Other Settings".
  • Tap "System Transfer", followed by "Transfer between Nintendo 3DS Systems" and wait until your two systems are connect to the Internet.
  • Terms of Use will appear here, click on "I Agree".
  • On the source unit (both DS'), select "Send from this System", and on the target unit, select "Receive from a Nintendo 3DS System"
  • Follow the instructions displayed on the screen to continue the transfer process.
