Samsung to Release Android-Based Smart Camera

The IFA 2012 event is around the corner and anticipations and expectations surrounding the event have reached mammoth proportions. Till now, Samsung was rumored to be offering the next iteration of Galaxy Note and Galaxy Player 5.8; however, a new report claims that the Korean tech giant will also launch the long-rumored Android-based smart camera.

The claim follows Nikon's announcement of its Android-powered camera, Coolpix S800c.

According to GSMArena, which cited a reliable source, Samsung's Galaxy Camera would be sporting a 4.8-inch Super AMOLED display, will run Google's Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich OS, 16-megapixel sensor, 10x zoom, and pop-up Xenon flash. The Samsung smart camera will also have Wi-Fi and 3G + Wi-Fi versions (only mobile data, no voice) and according to the reliable source, the company is already in talks with various carriers.

The GSMArena source also concurred that while the smart camera will be similar to the Galaxy S3, it will be about 1.5 to 2 times thicker than the S3 smartphone. The increase in thickness is to accommodate the 10X zoom.

Speculations regarding Samsung's smart camera sparked off earlier this year, when SammyHub reported a U.S. trademark filing for the Samsung Galaxy Camera. The "Galaxy Camera" trademark was filed with the USPTO with Goods and Services marked as "Cameras and camcorders."
